Salutations are found just above the body of a letter and begin with ‘Dear’ Mr. X or Madam X, some sort of professional title X or just the recipients name. How much longer are we going to keep on using this tired, old traditional ‘Dear’ salutation? With more emails than letters being sent to people the basic rules of proper letter openings may be about to change for the first time since the dark ages. But so far I don’t see any indication that this change is coming.
On the other hand The complimentary closing is changing and the boring Yours truly, or Sincerely yours is being replaced by more creative words even in formal letters. The SPUDART blog site put out a request for good salutations and letter closing a few years ago and is still getting contributions of wild and great valedictions.
Here are a few of my favorites:
In all that is well
As you wish
Wax on, wax off
There can be only one
Kindly
Word to your mother
Over the river and through the woods
Film at 11
There’s someone looking through your window
In body, mind and spirit
Walk in light
Grace and Peace
Onwards
I’m going to be working on some new and refreshing salutations and maybe, with help, we could bump the ‘Dear’ right off the page.
At your service,
Wendy
